San Luis del Carmen


San Luis del Carmen is a municipality in the department of Chalatenango, is bounded on the north by Azacualpa, Chalatenango and San Miguel de Mercedes, the east and southeast by Potonico, Suchitoto and south by southwest, west and northwest by San Francisco Lempa. The area of the municipality is 21.31 km2 and is mostly mountainous, with the exception of the plains of the shore of the reservoir Cerrón Grande. It has three cantons: El Pital, Los Naranjos and Santa Cruz.

San Luis del Carmen

San Luis del Carmen was founded in 1760 on land occupied a hacienda called San Luis. 1850 became a town in 1855 and became part of the department of Chalatenango with the name of San Luis del Carmen, in 1890 had a population of 1,389 inhabitants.

San Luis del Carmen is one of the most sparsely populated municipalities in Chalatenango and in El Salvador. According to the census of 2007, had about 2,200 inhabitants (about thousand more than we had in 1890), is worth mentioning that the population is very low by two factors: The flooding of land when the reservoir was created Cerrón Grande and civil war that took place in El Salvador in the early 80s. As a result most people in the community migrated to the capital San Salvador and to the United States drastically reducing the number of inhabitants.


The municipality of San Luis del Carmen celebrated its festivities from 15 to 18 October, in honor of the Virgen del Carmen. It also has a place for days bullfighting still one of the best in the country, its pleasant climate and humility of its people make this place nice.

Among its attractions are Lake or Reservoir Cerrón Suchitlán Grande, where you can take boat rides or ferry Moon. You can also visit the Catholic parish church which was built in 1820, becoming a structure with much historical value.

There are two access roads. The first is through the city of Chalatenango, San Miguel de Mercedes, San Fracisco Azacualpa and Lempa. The road is in perfect condition.
