The Cerron Grande Reservoir

The reservoir or lake Suchitlán Cerrón Grande is the largest lake in El Salvador. Formed between 1973 and 1976 with the construction of the Hydroelectric of Cerrón Grande, which owes its name to the property that was located along the same, on the cause of the Lempa River.

It is estimated that were flooded about 15,000 acres of land which caused discontent among those who occupied them. In 1975 all residents of counties and villages flooded were relocated there in a camp near called El Dorado (which is now known as Relocation Colonies 1, 2 and 3). The construction of the dam also flooded part of the road that was the entrance from The Coyolito to Chalatenango, which is now known as “Old Street”, and had to build a new road to Chalate. Suchitoto lost its access to land to Hacienda Colima Chalatenango and lost about two thousand hectares where sugar cane was grown, most of its production.

    Esa foto de la presa era la ruta que yo tomaba caminando hacia Potonico (ya hundido), en el año ’76 mi padre trabaja en la presa y fue cuando saque el 8vo grado, la familia vivía en Cabañas donde la foto ha sido tomado. Fue el único año que estudie en Chalatenango y me enamore de las chicas Chalatecas, tanto así que la madre de mi hijo es Chalateca. Nos conocimos en USA.
